Remotely Go Where No One Has Gone Before

800x300_Engineering Remote Services

Everyone is concerned with the global economy during this time of pandemic. Of course we are. Demand for almost everything has dropped, and businesses are struggling to stay afloat. While everyone is trying to stay positive that everything will be ok, it’s all very real. The truth is, it will be ok, but it will take time, and life won’t be the same as it once was.

As we move forward and settle into a new reality, businesses are making adjustments to accommodate a new way of life. This is no simple task considering guidelines and opinions change from country to country, state to state and province to province. The only new constant is that distance is a game changer…and this mentality is going to stick around.

What the Future will Bring

Moving forward, customers should expect fewer and fewer onsite visits. The cost of travel will go up and day trips will no longer have the value they once had. The great news is, a large portion of the world is already set up to remain connected regardless of restrictions. The last time mankind was faced with anything like this, the concept of a computer would be considered black magic.

As a result, more companies are investing in the right tools to accommodate the next way of doing business. It is estimated that the global VPN market will grow from 20.6 Billion dollars in 2018 to $36 Billion by next year. Podcasts and webinars are the new selling platform, and global conferencing is blowing up. Just about everyone has embraced the video call…Zoom has become a verb.

Better Support from the Comfort of your Desk

Remote services and remote support are becoming more accessible with so many platforms available. Google has released Meet, Microsoft Teams has replaced Skype for Business and there are many more but there is also something to be said about the human touch. These are 2 very simple tools that allow you to connect with colleagues and customers on a regular basis, but trying to explain anything over a chat box or video call can still prove to be challenging. If something requires an elaboration or explanation, just pointing to what you are talking about can become a 2-minute conversation (“No, the other lever…the OTHER other lever”). To address this, companies like PTC and CGS have developed tools to leverage augmented reality and improve business processes. Companies that are taking on these tools are truly investing in the future of customer service.

It is true that there are challenges that cannot be solved from a distance. The time will come when travel can resume, and it will! But transitioning into more remote work has an overall positive impact on both business and the planet. Remote services and remote support will continue to grow and solve daily challenges. Travel expenses and scheduling conflicts will decrease. Customers can receive the support they need much faster and their contract manufacturers in Mexico, India or the North Pole can receive the same response time. Additionally, the lasting impact the decrease in travel will have on the environment is yet to be determined, but there is no debate the smaller the carbon footprint, the better.

This may be a big change for some companies, others have been offering remote services for years. Regardless of how it has been, it’s tomorrow that needs attention. Is your company ready for what’s coming next?
